John Small (American football)

John Kenneth Small (November 20, 1946 – December 10, 2012 [1]) was an American professional football player who was a linebacker and defensive tackle with the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL).

[2][3][4] A native of Lumberton, North Carolina, he played collegiately for The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina where he was a three-time all Southern Conference selection as well as an Honorable Mention All American pick as a sophomore and junior.

Small was a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award given by the state of South Carolina; in 1977 he was a member of the inaugural class of the Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 1988 he was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and that same year was named to the Southern Conference 75th Anniversary team.
