He graduated with honours in Political Science from SP College in 1975 and later pursued a master's degree in sociology at Aligarh Muslim University.
Ahmad was admitted to various departments at the University of Kashmir, where he completed his postgraduate degree in political science from 1975 to 1977.
His administrative roles include Director of Information and Public Relations and Secretary of the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages.
As a writer, Ahmad has written an analysis of Kashmir's history, including the book, Kashmir: Exposing the Myth Behind the Narrative (2017), which challenges historical claims about the region's past, particularly those made by Kashmiri Pandit organizations regarding forced migration.
He critiques the Rajatarangini by Kalhana and advocates for a balanced understanding of Kashmir's cultural history that includes both Persian and Sanskrit traditions.
