This temple is located with the coordinates of (11°01′13″N 79°35′49″E / 11.020278°N 79.596863°E / 11.020278; 79.596863) at Komal near Kumbakonam,[3] in Mayiladuthurai district.

Shiva replied Her that as She closed His eyes with Her palms and so the world became dark, He would disappear from the Hasthavarna Jothi (light from the palms) and that She might find the 'jothi', by transforming as a cow and join Him again.
