Founded on 5 January 1868, it was originally supported by the Roman Catholic Church, but has been completely independent since 1996.
In 1966, it began collaborating with La Liberté, a Fribourg paper, from which it sources its national, international and economic news.
[2] Since the early 1980s, it has been a humanist opinion paper with focuses on societal and Christian topics, and is left-wing politically.
The paper has had several periods of financial issues and has sought donations from the public to remedy them.
