The racial makeup of the town was 90.42% White, 8.98% African American, and 0.60% from two or more races.

35.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 24.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

About 8.9% of families and 13.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.8% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those 65 or over.
