Sorokin received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in 1983 from Yale College.
He worked in private practice at the law firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo P.C., from 1992 to 1994.

On June 9, 2014, the United States Senate invoked cloture on his nomination by a 52–33 vote.
