Tornado counts are considered preliminary until final publication in the database of the National Centers for Environmental Information.
These tornadoes are more likely in the southern states due to their proximity to the unstable airmass and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, with occasional incursions farther north into the Midwest, particularly in November.
[1] [2] November ended with a slightly above average amount of 59 tornadoes, with most of them occurring in an outbreak at the beginning of the month.
Much of December was quiet and well below average before two outbreaks occurred in short succession at the end of the month.
The second one, which was much larger than the first one, produced at least 108 tornadoes, pushing the month to well above average.
