World War I: The passenger ferry was torpedoed and damaged in the English Channel by SM UB-29 ( Imperial German Navy) with the loss of at least 50 lives.

She was beached at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais.

Sussex was repaired post-war and returned to service.
