Loyew

Loyew[a] or Loyev (Belarusian: Лоеў, romanized: Lojeŭ,[b] IPA: [loyew]; Russian: Лоев, IPA: [ˈloɪf]; Polish: Łojów) is an urban-type settlement in Gomel Region, Belarus.

[2] The settlement is located along the right coast of the Dnieper River at the confluence with the Sozh.

Loyew arose on the site of an ancient settlement of the Dregoviches within the Principality of Chernigov.

[citation needed] The town is known for the Battle of Loyew of July 31, 1649, during the Khmelnytsky Uprising.

According to the results of the census held in 1897 the town had 4,667 inhabitants, among them 2150 Jews.
