The initial population of Malm was 993 people, which left Beitstad Municipality with 1,934.
During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee.
On 18 September 1914, a royal resolution changed the spelling of the name of the municipality to Malm.
At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Beitstad prestegjeld and the Nord-Innherad prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros.
The municipal council (Herredsstyre) of Malm was made up of 13 representatives that were elected to four year terms.
