Matsushiro Literary and Military School

It located in the Matsushiro neighborhood of the city of Nagano in the Chūbu region of Japan.

Of the over 250 han schools which existed in Japan at the end of the Edo period, it is the only one to survive in almost an intact form.

Work on the school began in 1851, but completion was delayed due to a fire which destroyed much of the Matsushiro jōkamachi.

The school was structured per the recommendations of Sakuma Shōzan, and taught a combination of traditional Chinese literature, Ogasawara-ryū etiquette, Chinese medicine and martial arts alongside rangaku topics, including western medicine, military science and artillery.
