Murici Ecological Station

It preserves a rugged area of Atlantic Forest that is important as a home for several species of rare or endangered birds.

[1] The ESEC is in the northwestern region of Alagoas, in an area that has been degraded by sugarcane plantations and cattle ranching.

Most of the station is in the Borborema Plateau, but parts of the east of the ESEC are in the coastal sedimentary tablelands.

[3] The Murici Environmental Protection Area was created by state law 5,907 of 14 March 1997 to provide a buffer zone for the ESEC.

[2] In the best preserved areas, mostly at the higher elevations, the forest forms a fairly uniform closed canopy up to 40 metres (130 ft) high that provides shade and retains moisture.

[2] Other species are orange-bellied antwren (Terenura sicki), Alagoas tyrannulet (Phylloscartes ceciliae) and the snake Bothrops muriciensis.

The areas of permanent preservation are not respected by the local population, but are cleared for subsistence farming, sugarcane and pasture.
