Novosil (Russian: Новоси́ль) is a town and the administrative center of Novosilsky District in Oryol Oblast, Russia, located on the right bank of the Zusha River 70 kilometers (43 mi) east of Oryol, the administrative center of the oblast.
[8] It was first mentioned in 1155 as a fortress called Itil and was the seat of the Olgovichi branch of the Rurik dynasty during the Middle Ages.

[10] During World War II, Novosil was occupied by the German Army from November 13 to December 27, 1941.
