The southern terminus of State Route 683 is at a T-intersection with State Route 93 about 0.50 miles (0.80 km) north of Hamden.

Its northern terminus is also at a T-intersection, this time with U.S. Route 50 nearly 6 miles (9.7 km) west of McArthur.

State Route 683 is located entirely within Vinton County.

Its original routing is the same one within Vinton County that it utilizes to this day.

There have been no significant changes to the routing of this highway since its inception.
