This first bridge was named the Henry Flagler Bridge, named for the founder of the parallel Florida East Coast Railway.
[3] A second two-lane bascule bridge (the one operating today) was built in 1964 right next to the 1934 bridge in an effort to widen the river crossing to four lanes.
[3] When the new high-level Roosevelt Bridge was completed in 1996, US 1 was rerouted over the new span.
[4] Although a small part of the 1934 span still stands abandoned on the north side of the river.
[5] Although the rest of the old Dixie Highway adjacent to the bridge has been given to the city of Stuart, the Florida Department of Transportation continues to maintain the bridge as unsigned State Road 707.
