It is spoken by the Sanhaja Berbers inhabiting the central part of the Moroccan Rif.
Despite its speech area, the Sanhaja language belongs to the Atlas branch of Berber.

Unlike some other Berber languages, Tifinagh script is never used in Senhaja de Srair.
