[2] It is also an educational and research institution that has four branches: bird ringing stations in Ventė Cape and Juodkrantė, nature reserves in Čepkeliai Marsh and Lake Žuvintas.

[2] The museum was established on 15 July 1919 together with the Natural Research Station in Kaunas, Vilnius Street.

A few years later, the Nature Research Station was transferred to the newly established Vytautas Magnus University and became the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy.

In 1929 it was moved to new premises in K. Donelaitis Street, where it was possible to set up an exhibition open to the public.

During the first Soviet occupation in 1940, the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy was moved to Vilnius University, while the museum remained in Kaunas.
