Thiranagama is the upmarket area[6][7] of the 24 km (15 mi) coastline of Hikkaduwa District.
In the 19th century, during the British Ceylon period, Hikkaduwa region was "the great resort of picnic parties from Galle"[8] (Galle was the largest city in southern Ceylon).
[10] The largest school of Thiranagama is Bodhiraja Maha Vidyalaya with around 280 students.
[11] Thiranagama is bordered by one of the most expansive beaches in the South West of Sri Lanka.
Extending over 3 km (1.9 mi), this wide beach is calm and a few quality restaurants.
