West of England Eye Infirmary

The West of England Eye Infirmary was a specialist ophthalmic hospital in Exeter, Devon.

A meeting was held on 11 August 1808 at the Royal Clarence Hotel where plans were made for a dedicated eye hospital in Exeter.

[2] The hospital opened on 1 November 1808, under the patronage of the Prince of Wales (later George IV), and in its first year treated 815 patients.

[6] An appeal was launched in 1896 to fund a new building, although progress was initially slow.

[7] The foundation stone of the new building was laid on 11 April 1899, with a design by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas.
