The peak is situated in Chugach National Forest, 5 mi (8 km) northeast of Bear Glacier, 2.1 mi (3 km) south-southeast of Marathon Mountain, and 5 mi (8 km) southwest of Seward, Alaska.

In fair weather, the Harding Icefield can be seen from the summit.
Based on the Köppen climate classification, Bear Mountain is located in a subarctic climate zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.
