As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 7,884 people, 3,360 households, and 1,942 families residing in the CDP.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 89.62% White, 2.32% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.90% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races.

There were 3,360 households, out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families.

35.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
