[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.3 km2 (2.5 mi2), of which 5.9 km2 (2.3 mi2) is land and 0.4 km2 (0.2 mi2) (6.94%) is water.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 4,246 people, 1,637 households, and 1,039 families residing in the CDP.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.24% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 1.25% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races.

There were 1,637 households, out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families.

31.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
