Kanra is located in the southwestern portion of Gunma Prefecture on the south bank of the Kabura River.

Gunma Prefecture Kanra has a humid continental climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cold winters with occasional snowfall.

Kanra has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral town council of 12 members.

In terms of national politics, the town is part of Gunma 5th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.
