Litomyšl Castle

In 1568, work started on the construction of the castle, overseen by Jan Baptista Avostalis and his brother Oldřich.

[4] From 1649, the castle belonged to the noble Trauttmansdorff family, who had it redesigned in the classicist Baroque style by František Maxmilián Kaňka in the first half of the 18th century (and are still preserved today).

The famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana was born in 1824 at the Brewery, an ancillary building next to the castle.

[4] After the Second World War, the castle was confiscated basis the so-called Beneš decrees and declared a national cultural monument in 1962.

The entire castle complex, which has been extensively renovated in recent years, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and was included in the list.
