The district was formed on 11 June 1996 from the northern parts of Samarinda Ilir, and it initially consisted of 6 villages.

[1] On 14 December 2010, the district of Sungai Pinang was separated from North Samarinda.

Previously, its district seat was located at Sungai Pinang Dalam.
