October 1917

The following events occurred in October 1917: and Desert Mounted Corps of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force attacked and captured Beersheba, Syria, from Ottoman forces, ending the stalemate in Southern Palestine and starting the Southern Palestine offensive.

Some 1,947 Ottoman troops were taken prisoner and another estimated 1,000 were killed or wounded.

British casualties were 171 killed.

[149] The capture of Beersheba was clinched with a rare (by this date) mounted charge by the Australian Mounted Division.
