The small seafront town is located about 220 kilometres (140 mi) southeast of Palermo and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Catania.

In the early 19th century, the town would be merged with Giarre, changing its name to Ionia in 1939.

[3][4] The town is located on the Ionian Coast, and borders with the municipalities of Acireale, Giarre and Mascali.

Its frazioni are Altarello, Archi, Carruba, Praiola, Quartirello and Torre Archirafi.
