The Smyrna Elementary School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.92% Native American, 0.14% Asian, and 0.49% from two or more races.

16.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
