He was rated a three-star recruit and initially committed to play college football at Missouri.

[1] Wheat failed to qualify academically to play Division I football and enrolled at Copiah–Lincoln Community College.

[3] Wheat committed to transfer to Mississippi State for his remaining collegiate eligibility.

[4] Wheat played in nine games with eight starts in his first season at Mississippi State and led the Bulldogs with five sacks.

[6] Wheat used the extra year of eligibility granted to college athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and returned to Mississippi State for a third season.
