1 seed in the Kansas City region (KC), the Spartans defeated Alcorn State, USC, Vanderbilt, and Stanford to reach the Final Four for the first time in program history.

In the National Semifinal round, the Spartans defeated perennial power Tennessee, 68–64.

Michigan State was beaten by Baylor, 84–62, in the National championship game.
